Students Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day In a Special Way
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration is set for Monday, January 19th, Noon – 1pm at the First Congregational Church in historic Canandaigua, New York.
The theme is "New Faces for the Future". Under the direction of Connie Fredericks-Malone, member of the MLK Committee and Scott Schauman, English Faculty and Drama Director at Canandaigua Academy, drama students from Canandaigua Academy will present a selection of quotations from Dr. King’s speeches, highlighting Dr. King’s humanity and his passion for peace and harmony.
"MLK Committee is committed to include young people in the annual celebration," Connie Fredericks-Malone says. "We feel strongly that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders." The MLK Celebration Planning committee will present a number of prizes to students who’ve created posters and essays depicting a message from Dr. King’s life and legacy.
This year as an added highlight, CA music students will interweave an original composition by Tom Davis, Chair of the Music Department at Canandaigua Academy. A choir of community singers will sing "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," under the direction of Edith Rice.
Canandaigua has become a leading community that embraces the positive messages of Dr. King and this year's celebration is the biggest yet, with more students stepping forward to become the "New Faces for the Future".
Following the celebration light refreshments will be served. There is no charge and all are welcome.

Downtown Canandaigua Merchants Release the Top Ten Reasons to Shop Downtown Canandaigua
Merchants remind consumers to be wiser with their money this holiday season.
The Downtown Canandaigua Merchants Association released the top ten reasons to shop downtown Canandaigua. This comes right before the holiday to remind consumers that where they spend their money can be just as important as their gift.
"Shopping downtown is a good habit," Don Stevens says, president of the Merchant Association. "Most of your holiday shopping can be done by local merchants, who really appreciate your business." Downtown Canandaigua is also home to many restaurants and galleries that are independently owned, who rely on locals to keep the economy steady.
The top ten reasons is a campaign created to increase the awareness of what actually happens when consumers support local independent businesses. The campaign is currently being promoted by newspapers, Facebook, radio, and their website at http://www.downtowncanandaigua.com..
Local merchants are also giving an incentive for shoppers, offering a $1000 shopping spree, which are given in gift certificates from shops, galleries, and restaurants. This is the third year for the holiday shopping spree, which is open for anyone over the age of 18.

Children's Book Author and Illustrator Offer Book Signing in Downtown Canandaigua
Canandaigua author, Donna Bennett, and Canandaigua Primary School art teacher, J.C. Mull, will be available for book signings Saturday, December 20th 1pm to 4pm at Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery at 71 South Main Street in Downtown Canandaigua. Light refreshments will be served and admissions is free.
The author and illustrator published their children's book, Petey and the Mean Pirates. This book is a delightful children’s story that appeals to both kids and parents, alike. Downtown Canandaigua Announces Holiday Open House
Downtown Merchants create a festive holiday experience with free stocking stuffers, holiday drink recipes with tasting, free elf dollars, plus a $1000 shopping spree.
With the holidays approaching, the Downtown Canandaigua Merchants Association is creating a holiday open house experience. The event is Friday, November 21- Sunday November 23rd in downtown Canandaigua. The weekend event is their holiday kick off, unveiling Main Street's holiday decorations, holiday themed gifts, apparel, and art. This year they have planned a fun adventure. A holiday drink recipe contest invites the public to go to participating merchants to sample a holiday drink with recipe. Consumers will also vote on the best. There is also a free stocking stuffer giveaway from participating merchants. The free stockings and stocking stuffers are one to a family while supplies last. A live elf will liven things up by giving away free "Holiday Elf Dollars" that can be redeemed by merchants. And for the third year, consumers can register to win a $1000 shopping spree for the holidays.
"This is the whole experience," Don Stevens, president of the Downtown Merchant Association explains. "The old historic buildings, the unique shops, restaurants, and galleries, and quaintness bring people together." As a business owner himself, he looks forward to a bright holiday season. "The horse drawn wagon rides, the newly renovated Santa's House, and the friendly merchants make downtown Canandaigua a holiday destination."
The Holiday Open House is a time when the merchants display their holiday themed products, whether it's apparel, gifts, or art. Taste of the Finger Lakes Offers Sips and Tastes to Savor
The 7th annual Taste of the Finger Lakes will be held on Wednesday, November 19th at The Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Thirty Finger Lakes area restaurants, wineries, custom brewcrafters and specialty food vendors will be on hand offering delicious samples. Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door. Canandaigua BID Director Sal Pietropaolo states, "The attraction of this event is two-fold. First, it helps bring together a diverse display of the culinary delights that the region has to offer and second it serves as an important fundraising event for our organization."
Scott Kreyer will be performing solo on keyboard throughout the evening. Locals may recognize Scott from his performances at NY Wine & Culinary Center and philanthropic events for the Canandaigua Rotary and VA.
With thirty tasting booths, attendees should plan to bring an appetite. People's Choice awards will be given in four categories, Best Taste, Best Sip, Best Specialty Food and Best Display. Attendees will want to make sure they have a good sampling before casting their votes. There are 12 restaurants including, Bristol Harbour, Brown Hound, Esperanza Mansion, Fiddlehead Concepts, Lumberyard Grille, Madder Lake Café, New York Wine & Culinary Center, Simply Crepes, Steamboat Landing, The Inn on the Lake, The Waterfront Grille and Vineyard Buffet. Seven specialty food vendors including, Allens Hill Farm, Chalet of Canandaigua, Hartmann's Old World Sausage, Monk's Bread, Naples Valley Brand Products, Red Jacket Orchards and Sweet Expressions. Nine wineries including, Anthony Road, Arbor Hill Grapery, Dr. Konstantin Frank, Eagle Crest Vineyards, Fox Run Vineyards, Fulkerson Winery, Glenora Wine Cellars, Heron Hill, and Wilhelmus Estate Winery. Two custom brewcrafters including, Custom Brewcrafters and High Falls Brewing Company.

Granger Homestead’s Christkindl Market and Holiday Art Walk make Canandaigua a holiday destination on November 7-9, 2008.
Historic Canandaigua brings two exciting events together for the first time. The weekend is titled "Deck the Halls in Historic Canandaigua", showcasing the 2nd Annual Christkindl Market at the Granger Homestead and Holiday Art Walk in downtown Canandaigua. The dates are set for Friday November 7th thru Sunday November 9th.
The second annual Christkindl Market at the Granger Homestead has been called "The charm of a quaint European village in the heart of historic Canandaigua". The Christkindl Market features 100 juried artists and craftsmen, with holiday ornament and décor display. There will be food, wine, and beer. Carriage rides are also available. This also marks the opening of their annual Festival of Trees.
In downtown Canandaigua, the annual Holiday Art Walk showcases over 17 galleries, art studios and boutiques. There will also be free art demonstrations, wine, food, and music. For the first time there will be a miniature Santa’s Village unveiled at All Things Art, with Merry TubaChristmas holiday performance on Saturday at 1pm.
"Historic Canandaigua is a destination for the holidays," Don Stevens, president of the Canandaigua Merchant’s Association.
