10th Annual Antique Show To Benefit Canandaigua's Granger Homestead Carriage Museum

On Sunday, February 8, 2009 the 10th annual Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale will be held at Steamboat Landing Banquet Center at 205 Lakeshore Drive in Canandaigua from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Plenty of free parking is available. Admission is $5.00.

There will be 35 quality antique dealers displaying and selling antiques in the spacious modern building. This year’s show is being held for the first time at the scenic lakeside location. Wares typically include country and period furniture, clocks, lamps and lighting fixtures, jewelry, postcards, paintings and books, linens, and all kinds of antique accessories. Returning this year are many dealers who have made the show a popular mid-winter event. Show organizers include Cheryl and Pete Van Denburg, Marianne Gallagher, Tricia Carey, Carla DeMeco and Laurel Wemett.

To learn more about the antique show and to download a coupon for a $1.00 off admission, go to www.CanandaiguaClassic.com. Or www.grangerhomestead.org .

Appraisal Opportunities: In the afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. anyone can bring in a favorite antique or collectible to consult local antiques expert H. Price Prazar who will provide a verbal appraisal at a cost of $5.00 per item. Bloomfield bookseller Sean Fagan (www.faganbooks.com) will again appraise books at a cost of two books for $5.00.

Granger Homestead Carriage Museum: Proceeds from this year’s antique show will go toward the cost of installing a new wooden floor in one of the three carriage barns at the Granger Homestead’s Carriage Museum at 295 North Main Street in Canandaigua. The horse drawn vehicle collection which includes over 100 carriages, sporting vehicles, sleighs, coaches, commercial wagons, and three hearses, is displayed and interpreted to the public from June through October. The availability of carriage and sleigh rides extends into the fall and winter months. Go to www.grangerhomestead.org for more details.

Drawing: With the $5.00 admission attendees can complete a show card for a chance to win either carriage or sleigh ride. The drawing will be at 3:30 p.m.; the winner does not need to be present to win.

Refreshments: Lunch and beverage will be available throughout the day in the Steamboat Landing’s lakeside restaurant.

Become a History Sleuth: Also at the 2009 show attendees can prove their antique meddle by identifying an unusual object from the Carriage Museum’s collection. Members of the Granger Homestead Carriage Committee will be on hand to challenge show attendees to identify a curious artifact made of wood and metal which was found in one of the carriage barns.

The mystery item can be viewed at the antique show. There is no cost to enter the contest, apart from paying admission to the antique show, of course. One entry per person is allowed. The winner doesn’t have to be present to win and will be selected randomly from the correct entries. He or she receives the choice of a free horse-drawn sleigh (or carriage) ride for two people.

Here’s more information about the new floor

“The vapor barrier and wood floor is needed in the pole barn to get the carriages off the concrete,” explains Denett Pimkowski, longtime chair of the volunteer carriage committee that oversees the Granger collection. About 10 years ago Pimkowski explains an historical study done on the barns included information about how vehicles should be kept off the concrete, since moisture was bad for the vehicle’s wood, paint, metal parts and upholstery. Similar advice came from other experts on vehicle conservation including one at the Long Island Museum of Art, History and Carriages at Stony Brook, NY.

“At a minimum, we need a means to get the carriages separated from ground moisture and changes in humidity. We have put in roof vents into the pole barn, gutters to take away the rain water, but still have moisture in the concrete. We want a floor that will look like a barn floor (and be a nice appearance to visitors) and also serve the moisture barrier to better preserve the carriages. This is part of our responsibility as stewards of this collection to keep them from deteriorating and preserve them for future generations.

Just saving the carriages from the burn pile is not enough to keep them for future generations, as they may still deteriorate in poor storage. Since these are large pieces, with different materials, what is good for the paint is not always the best for the upholstery or metal parts. Yet we have to consider the entire vehicle and draw upon the advice of experts in the field, which we have done,” says Pimkowski.

Downtown Canandaigua Merchants Release the Top Ten Reasons to Shop Downtown Canandaigua

Merchants remind consumers to be wiser with their money this holiday season.

The Downtown Canandaigua Merchants Association released the top ten reasons to shop downtown Canandaigua. This comes right before the holiday to remind consumers that where they spend their money can be just as important as their gift.

"Shopping downtown is a good habit," Don Stevens says, president of the Merchant Association. "Most of your holiday shopping can be done by local merchants, who really appreciate your business." Downtown Canandaigua is also home to many restaurants and galleries that are independently owned, who rely on locals to keep the economy steady.

The top ten reasons is a campaign created to increase the awareness of what actually happens when consumers support local independent businesses. The campaign is currently being promoted by newspapers, Facebook, radio, and their website at http://www.downtowncanandaigua.com..

Local merchants are also giving an incentive for shoppers, offering a $1000 shopping spree, which are given in gift certificates from shops, galleries, and restaurants. This is the third year for the holiday shopping spree, which is open for anyone over the age of 18.

For a list of the top ten reasons, and for information on the shopping spree, go to:

Children's Book Author and Illustrator Offer Book Signing in Downtown Canandaigua

Canandaigua author, Donna Bennett, and Canandaigua Primary School art teacher, J.C. Mull, will be available for book signings Saturday, December 20th 1pm to 4pm at Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery at 71 South Main Street in Downtown Canandaigua. Light refreshments will be served and admissions is free.

The author and illustrator published their children's book, Petey and the Mean Pirates. This book is a delightful children’s story that appeals to both kids and parents, alike. Mrs. Bennett wrote the book to address the common childhood belief that all pirates have to be rough and tough and aggressive (and, as a parent, she knows that sometimes “little pirates” can act out that way at home, school, or daycare). But, Petey is different…

Brought to life by the wonderfully talented illustrator, J. C. Mull, Petey wins over the hearts of the mean pirates (and even a few hungry sharks) using something other than swords, angry words, and bullying.

Mrs. Bennett says: "This is a tried and true story I have told my three children over the years to let them experience how a nice pirate can actually be the hero. I am excited to share our family pirate story with other families."

Petey and the Mean Pirates will soon be available nationwide at retail bookstores and is currently featured at Judy's Bargain Books and the Unique Toy Shop in Canandaigua, NY. The book will be available for purchase, signed and gift wrapped for the holidays, at the book signing event and online at http://www.threechiquitaspublishing.com  and http://www.amazon.com

New 100% Soy Wax for Scented Soy Candles from Wick-edly Sent

(Canandaigua, N.Y) – Wick-edly Sent is keeping up with these changing times and has introduced an even greener way to burn your favorite scented candles. Although Wick-edly Sent has advocated from the beginning the benefits of their soy scented candles, they are still thinking up new ways to make their candles even better for you and the environment.

Soy wax burns cleaner resulting in less toxins for you, and your family to breathe, not to mention leaving out the film of black soot that other scented candles may leave behind on the walls, curtains and furniture of your home. Soy candles also burn at a cooler temperature, providing a significantly longer burn time, an average of 20% - 50%, which is always beneficial when trying to get more bang for your buck. Soy wax is non-toxic and over time it will not harm the environment making scented soy candles a "greener" choice, as well as the fact that soybeans are a renewable resource and grown right here in the United States. This in turn helps Wick-edly Sent support their local community and economy.

Their new 100% soy candles are now offered in a new line of jars, since this type of wax is only suitable for containers because of its not so solid texture. "Soy blends" are needed to produce solid wax for votive candles. According to co-owner Don Stevens, "The new smooth sided jars help to burn your scented candles cleaner and there is less wax left behind to waste."

About Wick-edly Sent:

Scott Mackey and Don Stevens, owners, opened Wick-edly Sent in 2003 in Baltimore, and moved to NY State in 2005. The scented candles are available online, and can be shipped nationwide. In addition, natural olive oil soap and bath products are available.

Innkeepers offer Finger Lakes visitors a fantastic view and bed and breakfast amenities that continues to draw more guests seeking a unique getaway.

Seeking a Finger Lakes bed and breakfast can be a difficult choice. This is something Henry and Barbara Owens knew when opening Bristol Views in 2003. The Finger Lakes bed and breakfast sits on County Road 12, in Naples, overlooking Canandaigua Lake. Nestled in the Bristol Hills, located on what is known as the "high road", Bristol Views offers all the finest comforts and amenities of other Finger Lakes lodging establishments, and then some. The recently renovated historic farmhouse holds charm and an eloquence of its own; guests can view old photographs of the building in an upstairs hallway, just like a guided tour, while antiques and cozy furniture create a fetching atmosphere.

Besides having cross country skiing packages with Bristol Mountain and Hunt Hollow Ski Club, there are also vineyards for wine tastings nearby, an outside hot tub available all year round, and full breakfasts every day. So what keeps this Finger Lakes bed and breakfast so successful? "The comforting atmosphere," Barbara Owens says. "The friendly innkeepers," she chuckles, "and the hearty American breakfasts." Henry Owens, her husband agrees with all the above. "I hear guests saying all the time ‘I don’t eat like this at home’." More reasons that contribute to their success are that they’ve been called the "Perfect romantic weekend getaway". With four luxurious rooms, a pampering hot tub, large deck with lounging chairs, piano, and a wood burning stove, no one would argue.

And let’s not forget that spectacular view. One of the reasons they chose this spot for a Finger Lakes bed and breakfast was the spectacular view. They are just a few feet away from an overlook that attracts daily motorists on County Road 12, which got national attention on the covers of I LOVE NY as the most picturesque and photographed road in the Finger Lakes.

Tourists are not the only guests enjoying this hideaway, Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse residents are discovering the opportunities that this Finger Lakes bed and breakfast has to offer. Bristol Views is now offering rollback rates by bringing back prices from 2005 until April of 2009. This is their "thank you" and their way of celebrating their fifth anniversary. Barbara and Henry Owens invite guests to stay for a relaxing getaway and enjoy the splendors of Bristol Views.

Downtown Canandaigua Announces Holiday Open House

Downtown Merchants create a festive holiday experience with free stocking stuffers, holiday drink recipes with tasting, free elf dollars, plus a $1000 shopping spree.

With the holidays approaching, the Downtown Canandaigua Merchants Association is creating a holiday open house experience. The event is Friday, November 21- Sunday November 23rd in downtown Canandaigua. The weekend event is their holiday kick off, unveiling Main Street's holiday decorations, holiday themed gifts, apparel, and art. This year they have planned a fun adventure. A holiday drink recipe contest invites the public to go to participating merchants to sample a holiday drink with recipe. Consumers will also vote on the best. There is also a free stocking stuffer giveaway from participating merchants. The free stockings and stocking stuffers are one to a family while supplies last. A live elf will liven things up by giving away free "Holiday Elf Dollars" that can be redeemed by merchants. And for the third year, consumers can register to win a $1000 shopping spree for the holidays.

"This is the whole experience," Don Stevens, president of the Downtown Merchant Association explains. "The old historic buildings, the unique shops, restaurants, and galleries, and quaintness bring people together." As a business owner himself, he looks forward to a bright holiday season. "The horse drawn wagon rides, the newly renovated Santa's House, and the friendly merchants make downtown Canandaigua a holiday destination."

The Holiday Open House is a time when the merchants display their holiday themed products, whether it's apparel, gifts, or art. This is a time when Main Street is decorated with holiday lights, and represents a kick-off to the holiday shopping season. Having more activities, such as the holiday drink contest, free stocking stuffers, and elf dollars create a more festive atmosphere for consumers.

Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast Celebrates Five Successful Years

Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast Celebrates Five Successful Years
