Canandaigua author, Donna Bennett, and Canandaigua Primary School art teacher, J.C. Mull, will be available for book signings Saturday, December 20th 1pm to 4pm at Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery at 71 South Main Street in Downtown Canandaigua. Light refreshments will be served and admissions is free.

The author and illustrator published their children's book, Petey and the Mean Pirates. This book is a delightful children’s story that appeals to both kids and parents, alike. Mrs. Bennett wrote the book to address the common childhood belief that all pirates have to be rough and tough and aggressive (and, as a parent, she knows that sometimes “little pirates” can act out that way at home, school, or daycare). But, Petey is different…

Brought to life by the wonderfully talented illustrator, J. C. Mull, Petey wins over the hearts of the mean pirates (and even a few hungry sharks) using something other than swords, angry words, and bullying.

Mrs. Bennett says: "This is a tried and true story I have told my three children over the years to let them experience how a nice pirate can actually be the hero. I am excited to share our family pirate story with other families."

Canandaigua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Professional Women's Club Annouces the 2008 Athena Award Winners

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. The Canandaigua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Business and Professional Women's Club announces that Deborah Denome is the 2008 recipient of the prestigious ATHENA Award.

 

Ms. Denome was recognized at the 24th Annual ATHENA Awards dinner held at The Inn on the Lake on November 13th. She is the Director of Seeking Common Ground.

Denome considers her most meaningful leadership role in community service has been the challenge of finding potential collaborators who can share a passion about a cause and discovering what people can accomplish together as very fulfilling. "I have been fortunate to create, with local farmers, food service directors and the Ontario County Cooperative Extension, a Farm-to-Cafeteria model that has now received USDA recognition and funding as an effective example of creating new markets for local farmers while bringing fresh, wholesome produce to local students in seven schools and patients in four local care facilities." Says Denome.

 

Deborah, Executive Director of Seeking Common Ground, considers one of her top professional accomplishments to be finding extraordinary co-workers and co-creating successful new models of sustainability in our community. This includes a Farm to Cafeteria program, organic Community Farm, and the Herb Haven program for women striving to become self-sufficient, are valued accomplishments. In her past corporate career, she served as a Vice President at Logical Operations, and subsequently Vice President at WorkSmart International, both international training and publishing companies.

 

Since co-founding Seeking Common Ground (SCG) with four other women in 1997, most of Denome's work as been dedicated to helping women achieve self-sufficiency through role modeling, mentoring, and the development and delivery of the Herb Haven program. Learning new transferable skills empowers women to care for themselves and their families.

The 2008 Women of Distinction awards were presented to: Anne Galbraith for Professional Achievement, Marjorie Donhauser for Volunteer Service, Suzanne Farley for Entrepreneurial, and Linda Janczak received the Lifetime Achievement award for demonstrating sustained professional achievements, advocacy and leadership, creating an enduring impact on the greater Canandaigua area.

The BPW Woman of the Year award recognizes a member of the Canandaigua Business and Professional Woman's Club who has made a significant impact on the development and quality of the club. Margaret "Maggie" Meyer was named the 2008 Woman of the Year for her outstanding contributions and dedication to the mission of the club.
